Just a Wie bit short

Michelle Wie's withdrawal from the Ginn Tribute is questionable at best. I want to like her, I really do. But this latest stunt, in a stunt-littered "career", takes the cake.

W/Ds due to injury are not uncommon. Phil Mickelson withdrew from the Memorial this week, allegedly due to an injury he believes he incurred at a practice round at Oakmont, host course of the US Open.

But the Wie camp has become a circus. Recently Wie's handlers announced she would not play in any PGA events this year. A week later she accepted an invite to the John Deere. What?

Now the Ginn thing. Wie was 14-over through 16 holes when her agent, not her doctor or swing coach or even her shrink...her AGENT pulled her aside to talk. I am SURE he wasn't discussing the little-known rule of the LPGA that states "if any non-member shoots 88 or higher that she will not be allowed to compete on tour for the remainder of the year."

Wie was two bogies away from shooting 88. That would have put her out of every tournament other than the US Open and British Open, which are co-sponsored events and do not fall under the LPGA rule.

Immediately after that conversation with her agent, Wie withdrew from the tournament due to an injury to her wrist.

That wrist injury just saved her a couple million dollars I would guess. Nike frowns on paying players who don't play.

But again, I'm sure that is not what her agent was discussing with her...hmmmmmm.

What do you think? Leave a comment and share your thoughts. Is Michelle Wie a phenom...or a phlop!

Personally I think miss Wie should never have rushed her playing career. She was not ready for the pressure of the big time, even the womens tour, never mind trying to take on the men. Don't get me started on the sponsorship  B.S.  . I do not agree with the kind of money paid in endorsements when the people working in the factories get paid pennies a day.

I agree with you Jim, I try my hardest to find the good in the "Michelle Wie Saga" but this has gotten out of control, and it's idiots like her agent and corporate sponsors that have made this extremely talented young girl's life a circus act.  This rollercoaster that has become of her career is insulting to the LPGA Tour (which she is apparently to good for), the PGA Tour, and  the game of golf itself.  Golf is a game of honor, first and  foremost, the only game or sport in which you call penalties on yourself, and this stunt she pulled about her wrist is probably the least honorable thing she could have done.  Please don't get me wrong, I don't put the blame on this young, naive women.  This young woman has all the talent in the world, but unfortunately she is being told what to do by a entourage of money hungry supporters including her parents.  I know it wasn't her decision to withdraw from the Ginn, and I know she is not the one deciding to play in PGA tour events, but this is what "they" have made of her.  My only hope is that she can eventually separate herself from these blood sucking vultures and move on to the great LPGA career she has in front of her.  Michelle needs to take some notes from Sean O'Hair and not Ty Tryon.  There is a reason the LPGA Tour has that rule in place, I think the rest of the year off would have been the best thing to ever happen to her.

I absolutely agree that people come (and tune in) to watch Michelle Wie. And no, she has never won on the LPGA and never made a cut in a PGA event.

I'm all for players who attract new fans. Like John Daly. But JD has won...and he as won a Major!!

MW needs to concentrate on golf...not on her career. That may sound stupid but we've seen way too many talented kids burn out due to their parents and their agents influence!

Can you say "Jennifer Capriati"?

Michelle, keep practicing and keep playing LPGA events. You're too good of a golfer to let the business of golf get in the way. The money will come. And your Dad will live a very good life. Just tell him to hold up...while you grow up.

Has she ever proved herself since she has turned pro? I don't think she has ever won on the LPGA or even made the cut when trying to play on the PGA. Sure; she's still a kid fresh out of high school so maybe it will sust take a couple of years to either rise or fall. At this point, I don't consider her a phenom but a drawer of people to the tournaments.
