I strongly believe lesson volume can be increased by supporting my teaching with reference materials, both literary as well as video. Considering 85 to 90 percent of what we retain is visual, the more I can support my verbal (auditory) and feel (kinesthetic) teaching with visual instruction, the greater the impact of my lesson. For instance, I like to show my students pictures from current tour players that have a similar build of that of the student. This visual support helps me convey and create a mind impression and visual interpretation. For example growing up my teacher always showed me pictures of Davis Love III because I am built similar to him.
I have books that I have compiled throughout my years of teaching and have many of them on a shelf in my office. I may use only a selected few for most of my lessons, but I have read and studied all of them. This helps demonstrate to students a perceived value of their lesson. These books also serve as reference to support my instructional philosophy as well as enhance communication between myself and my student.
Books stores such as Barns and Noble are great places to find books about golf. The next time your with your personal PGA Professional ask him or her what is their favorite golf books are. As for myself I like Dr. Gio Valentes "Fearless Golf." If you enjoy reading and enjoy golf this books is just for you. It will help you metally on the course.
See you at the lesson tee and be sure to seek out your local PGA Professional the next time you need help.
