Understanding Gender Differences in Instruction

Posture and center of gravity location:
As a golf teacher, I need to be cognizant of gender differences when working with male and female students. For example, a woman’s center of gravity is lower and farther back than a man’s. This is due to a woman carrying more weight below her waist relative to most men, who are broad in their chest and shoulders. As a result, it is necessary to get a woman to bow more forward from her hips at address, with very little knee flex so her weight can favor her toes. I actually like to see my female students be able to tap their heels. This enables them to coil their upper body properly and be in balance throughout the golf swing. If I have female students who have trouble getting their golf ball into the air, or tend to be too upright with their backswing, I then get them bend forward properly from their hips to counterbalance their lower center of gravity.

While I teach as many men as women, by making each feel that I understand their differences and that I care about their success helps me turn that confidence and trust into committed students over time and extends my relationship with them past that of simply teacher/student. These extended relationships and an increasing clientele base allow me to keep my lesson schedule as full as I wish it to be.

Remember, if you need help with your golf game please contact your local PGA Golf Professional.  If you don't know how to find one please send me your zip code and I'll happily help you locate one near you.  Until then, keep your grip pressure light and your ball in the short grass.
