I have times when my drives set me up pretty good but I'll push or pull my second shot and if there is a tree anywhere near where  my ball is going to stop; that tree will get in the way one way or another. A couple of years ago there was no such thing as playing it smart and just get it back to the fairway. I have taken my medicine more than once but I just don't have the consistent length needed for some of the par 5's; especially when I need to chip out sideways.

I have to agree with William about the par 5's. I know with me I have in the back of my mind that I am hexed with the par 5's, but really it is due to me biting off too much on the 2nd shot. My short game its great but I tend to leave myself on the wrong side of the hole which I am working on right now. Maybe you too are trying to get too close on the 2nd shot. Instead of a 3 or 5 wood for the second shot maybe a hybrid or 4 iron, 5 iron shot. So what if you are hitting a 9 iron or a full PW for a 3 shot and not a sandwedge or a half pitching wedge. Remember "always more than 1 way to skin a cat."

Congrats with a pat on the back! It is a great feeling and awesome momentum to take to the next round. Just keep remembering that you started off with a tough couple of first holes and still managed to break 90. So the next time you play you will know you still can break 90 with a bad hole here and there.

Congrats!  I'm shocked that you feel the Par 5's are so tough.  I would have thought its the best chance at a birdie?  Good work! -Will

Congrats to you, and your round, scoring in the 80s I think your low scoring round says you were in the top !0%  of all the golfers world widefor that round. Enjoy the feeling. Now that you know, and have the mind set you can do it, your next sub-90 round will be much easier. Don't be surprised if you shoot an 85.

Just to let you know how humbling this game can be. I have played probably 30 rounds of golf so far through April this year. In three different states, and 10 different courses. All had been in the 80s with a few in the high 70s. My first round in May started out like a nightmare. Double bogies for the first 6 holes. OBs, lost balls, easy putts missed, hooks, slices, too short or too long, you name it, I was playing poorly. A bogey on the 8th hole, and I make the turn at 13 over par. Thought about calling it a day, but the weather was great, and I was golfing. Figuring the back 9 couldn't be any worse, I decided to continue on. 10 through 16 I played much better. On 17 I tink I let my mind get in the way. I started to think that if I could par 17, and 18, I would get out of this round with an 87. Not to be, as i doubled both of those holes and walked  to my car with a 91 (+20).  Today will be a better day I am sure......FHs

Congratulations, my friend! That is a real accomplishment. I have found that once breaking 90, I'm feeling good about individual shots more, but taking some bigger risks. On the order of -- at the risk of not breaking 100, just going at it with the five wood from 200+, over the water. What the heck. Having some really fun shots and feeling good about the ones that go down, you compete against yourself, anyway. Congratulations.
