So I had been out of golf now for about 1 month due to a lower lumbar stress from work or maybe golf. Depending on the physician you get a different story. I could not even hold a driver out straight without being in a lot of pain. I had walked as if I had Scoliosis. Now after Some rest and therapy I decided to play a little golf with my father in a scramble event. Figure why not no pressure. we did ok finished at -11 for the day. I hit only 1 really bad shot and 2 so-so shots with the wedge. The wedges were actually farther than I had hit before. I realized that I was swinging about 75-80% power. My drives were just as long and on 1 hole I hit a fade which was one of the longest I have hit in a long time even before the injury. So I have learned that every once in a while you need to step down a notch and tone it down to get back into the flow. Sometimes when you are swinging just a little to fast your body is not insync. Not hitting it flush. Just a couple of millimeters off here and there makes a big difference out there. So now my new look is hopefully a nice slow looking swing that is timed perfectly with out stressing the rest of my body. I have a fluid swing that a lot of people stop to watch but it too gets out of sync.
Yes I truly believe in the 3/4 backswing. I have been doing it for about 10 years now and love it. Much more control. My problem was and is still is sometimes I am too fast from the top. I now felt that what feels like the first 2 feet on the downswing is just kinda falling ( like it should) then I sped the swing up once I was in the slot. it was different for me. I had not felt this in a long time.
You know there must be something to Boros's quote "swing easy hit hard". The injury to my right hand was pretty gruesome, and even though it is pretty much healed, the mental thought of re-injuring it is still with me. In my case, I am leaving my left hand grip in charge of my downswing more so than before, and with a nice easy tempo, I have been hitting alot more good shots. I played 54 holes this past week. During this stretch (80, 81, 76) of play I probably only hit 10 shots that I would consider really bad for my game. If not for some missed putts with in 10' I would have broke 80 in all three rounds. My putter and I were just a bit out of sync with each other. A few pulls, and way too many lip outs. In my long game I just made it a point to swing easy, (80%) and let the club do all the work. My biggest improvement was my accuracy with my driver. I hit alot of fairways, with an average of 250 yards. I have hit much longer drives, but they seldom ended up in the fairway for the most part. I am not a very good "bomb and gouge" player like you see on the pro tours. I am not one to wish anyone an injury, but they can show us that swinging too fast is not the way to go. Golfers might be pleasently surprised how much more accurate a 3/4 swing, with a less lofted club, for the distance required, can be for their respective game. FHs
