Consistency

I have been playing a lot of golf lately. 3-4 rounds a week, I have also thrown in a few  hours of practice between rounds. My scores have all been with in 4 strokes of each other per round, and I have been breaking 80 a little more often. So I have to guess that consistent play. and practice breeds consistent scoring. Not big news, as we all know the more we play/practice the better our golf game becomes. I read that the pros put in many hours every day either practicing, or playing. Someone posted that VJ puts in many 12 hour days working on his game. Tiger says he (when healthy) works on a specific part of his game every day his personal or non golf working schedule permits. I once asked Tom Watson how much he practices. He told me that in his younger days he devoted 50-60 hours a week to his game. So what are your opinions on how well a person can learn to play while playing 1 or 2 rounds a week, with say 2 hours of practice time thrown in between rounds? What about the golfer who only plays once a month. What should he, or she expect out of their game? I am going on a road trip to Wyoming next week, and plan on playing 3 rounds of golf on 3 courses I have not seen before. Since I am playing pretty well right now, it will be fun to get on an unknown track to see just how well I can play.   FHs

My father just retired on Friday and his agenda is to play about 3x a week. So I know where you are coming from there. As far as "conservative" with a better player, my opinion is to not do that. What effect does he have on your game. Enjoy this persons swing and thought process and learn. I spent many days sitting on a bench at the range watching Roger Dunn and Jason Gore hit balls. You should play your own game always until you get into territories you have not seen or a 3 stroke lead coming into hole #17 of a golf tournament. Then be a little conservative. Every once in a while I too will get into that Phil Mickelson mode of hell on wheels with my game but usually when I know I am in some state of uforia (cant even spell that one it is so good lol) and really can't miss anything I aim at.

As far as my beginning I was lucky  enough to work on a driving range when learning  so yes I had a lot of time invested BUT I had 3 pro's who I got along with great and they were watching me all the time. And 4 out of 5 days they were CORRECTING my faults. Yes I will agree there is a great deal of time investment, but it has to be the right way of practicing or it is a great deal of wasted time and discouragement. All in all I understand the "rusty" part. I am always looking for an oil can in my later years

Ron, being a 1 hncp is it not true that during the beginning of your golf game you put alot of time, and effort in to it? Of so, how much? I have some golfing friends that only play once or twice a month, but it did take a lot of effort on their part to play to single digits. They say it's like riding a bicycle....you never forget how, you just get rusty, Myself I have two golf games. I have a conservative game that I use when playing new courses, or get paired up with golfer who is much better than I. This conservative approach is not as fun, or relaxing as my normal game. That game is my shoot from the hip, trying the impossible, or as my wife says "just showing off". Actually there is only about 5 stroke average between the two.  As for me playing so much right now, I worked hard for alot of years,  to be able to do these types of things after retirement.  FHs

FH's

First of all I am jealous you are playing that much golf. UUUGGGHHH I wish I could.  I think your question is not a matter of how much they can learn but how much they can execute what they are trying to accomplish. If they are a beginner I think that would be a slower process than A person like me who is a 1 hcp who would lose touch and feel with only playing once a month. I only DO play like once every 4-6 weeks do to family. I can learn something from an article but my touch and execution takes a few swings to get back. I usually can shoot about a 75 with playing once every 4-6 weeks but if I played say twice a week I can shoot par and if I was playing as much as you 3-4 rounds a week with some practice I really think I can shoot sub par consistently. I may not hit it as far as before when I did play twice a week but I do understand that I have to use an extra club to accomplish my goal which is fine.

now the same can work in the opposite direction too. If you are working on a wrong move that you think is right, the more you work the wrong move the faster you will totally disrupt your game compared to someone who may practice the wrong move once a month

As far as Wyoming, you are smart enough I think and good enough to know just to hit to the fat parts of fairways and greens that you are not sure of and its surroundings. You are on vacation don't need to be a hero.

Have a nice trip you lucky dog
