Now...you'd think I'd be playing a lot of golf now that I'm not working....right? WRONG. I am just a bit too particular, it seems, to get anyone to play with me EARLY. I've always had that problem, but it's gotten worse. My good pals who usually play on Sunday AMs have purchased a new house in a retirement community a few hours north of here. Arg. And it seems that's where they always want to be...even though they aren't QUITE retired yet. So...with everyone else working for a living, and ME unable to handle the florida summer head midday...I'd have to go play alone. I do that, sometimes, but not as often as I'd like. AND there's that cashflow issue. Golf and guilt don't go well together. ::SIGH::

Froghairs...I've heard the same for the past year or so on the decline of golf. There was an article (Golf Digest maybe?) on the great deals you can get at private clubs these days because they are STARVED for members and up to their eyeballs in debt. HA HA HA is all I can say. I wouldn't spend my money belonging to a private club...my spouse doesn't golf, or spa, or play tennis...and I'm not going to pay for "social" nonsense I don't want. I would also need a club with at least 2 courses, otherwise...gawd, who wants to play the same course all the time?

Seriously though, I'm sad to see what the industry has done to itself. The big issues with golf are TIME and MONEY. So Pace of Play, and Fees have to be addressed.

I would play 4 mornings a week if I could pay less than 50.00 and be done in 3 1/2 hours. I might even stick around and eat and drink...but as things stand I don't have time. No time = no time to spend money at the bar/restaurant.

Like Ron says; get there early and go out anyway. That exactly what I do. I show up unannounced as a single. The pro shop guy takes my money, and the starter puts me with some body. Simple as that. For about a 5 week period I, as a single had the first tee time in the morning. It was understood by me and the pro shop guy to put whom ever else wanted an early tee time in that time slot with me. We usually were able to make up a decent foursome. Now days I still show up unannounce, but I just walk the back nine, and play two ball since I am usually the only one on that nine. What ever works,  FHs

Steph,

Hard to get the people out I know.  I too have seen the decline in golf as well. Courses that took 6 hours to play now take 4 due to less people.

As far as country clubs I used to belong to a nice one that was a steal. It cost at the time $3000. to join. They held the first stage of PGA qualifyer there as well as The U.S. Open Qualifyer. As a matter of fact Freddy Couples qualified for the PGA Tour there. Steve Pate is the touring pro there. It was great all the golf you can eat, all the range balls you can hit(off real grass) and a 125 yard pitching green with 2 bunkers for sand play.  They had Tennis, camping, swimming, fishing, and a small motel for the tournament seasons. The membership was 300 a month plus food and beverage. I started to think like you who would want to play the same course over and over again, but Country Clubs usually have what is called a "sister" program. I was able to play 4 other courses (country clubs) at no additional costs, just a call from my pro shop for the tee time usually after 10 a.m.( I do like early ams too but who is complaining) and I had access to 12 other country clubs at a huge discounted rate. If my pro was friends with other pros we could even play places where they held major events. I played Riviera in L.A. (Nissan Open) Valencia Country club( Seniors SBC Classic)

Unfortunantly I had to give it up to support my daughters gymnastic career which ended quickly after blowing out her knee in the National Championships on the beam. I felt really awful for her with all the time and hard work she put into it.

I think golf needs a "CORRECTION" as the government puts it on some of their prices as I mentioned in a reply to Froghairs blog.

Who knows maybe just get there early Steph and maybe as luck will have it and make a new friend who likes to play early as well. Life is funny in that respect.
