I learned this today from a friend on mine that worked at a golf course for 4 years. He claims they move the pin daily to prevent wear and tear on the green. In addition they also move them during tournament's to a tougher spot on the green. So the same hole may in-fact be harder do to the different spot. He also claims that the pin on the green is suppose to be so many inches away from the edge on the green according the usga rules.

Willard,

True,  Pins are changed sometimes not as much as daily basis depending on the course and the amount of play they receive, but surely every other day if not daily. And yes for major tournaments they are put in what we call " sucker positions" on purpose to challenge that field. Some courses if it is a regular mens club or local city tournament will mix up tough and easy positions to give the opportunity to take advantage of some holes while suffering on others.   greenskeepers can be devils at times.

I believe the minimal footage from the edge of a green is 5 feet. You wont see that too much on a regular course. Usually they keep them about 10 feet from any one fringe. Go to a pro event and take note on some positions. You will wonder how they even get the ball close to the pin.
