Finally Playing Decent Golf Again

I have played poor golf before, but it was usually only for a round or two, usually in bad weather, and then my better game would show back up, and would last a few months before something else vulgar would creep back into my swing.. Howevewr what happened the past few months was some what of a shocker to me. Back in October i drove to Texas, and played a very good round of golf in Grants, NM. Once I arrived in Saginaw, TX and started playing again, my game went so far south, I was about ready to buy some colored balls, and play at the south pole. Before winding up in the hospital with  double pneumonia I played 6 rounds in the high 90s, and I am not talking temprature here. After a week of hospital medical help, and 2 weeks recuperating at my brothers, I played another 8 rounds over the next few weeks, still scoring in the high 90s. Up till then I have always played in the low 80s, and high 70s on a very regular basis. I finally get back to Vegas, on my home course, expecting to at least break 90, and I am still stuck scoring in the 90s!!!???  It was not just one part of my game that was I was failing at, but the whole thing. Errant drives, poor distance, diasterous short game, and my putting was still way off the charts. Even though the thought of new equipment crossed my mind, I knew that would not solve my swing/putting issues, and decided to just continue to play through my long slump. Last week I decided to try something different. Nothing new, but something I had not done in quite a few years. I started playing 18 holes, three holes at a time. By that I mean I would only worry about my scoring for three holes at a time. After each set of three holes, in my own mind it was the start of three new holes for me. Since I have started playing this way, I have been playing very good golf again, even carding a 2 over par 74, on a course I have not played in a few years, in very cold, damp weather. My last 5 rounds have me averaging 79.8 per round. Never did figure out what my prior problem was, and to be honest I probably don't want to know. Perhaps the illness had something to do with it. I am just glad to be playing well again. Just in time too, because next month I will playing a couple of rounds in the Anaheim (Disneyland) California area with my 2 son in laws. Lots of family braging rights on the line.........FHs

BTW- Happy Holidays to all you 19th Hole Folks..............

Thanks for all the responses. Long term slumps can be scary. What I probably should have done was just put my clubs away for an extended period of time, and took up checkers. The other day I had a bad front nine, which caused me some concern, but I played the back nine in fine fashion which made it a fun round. We are playing in cooler weather than is comfortable right now. With the added clothing to stay warm, the shorter swings require more thought on club selection. Those of you in the colder climates that do not allow for winter golf, just hang in there. Warmer days are just around the corner. Of course some of us live closer to that corner than others. I email a friend up in Canada, who tells me it will be mid May before he can get back on his home course. Right now he is making do with a net, and piece of carpet in his garage. I am a desert dweller...what else can I say.

As for selling stuff, I think the same way about the Golf Channel. Way too many infomercials, and not enough golf, or golf instruction. Then again, it is business, and those infomercials probably pay better than regular advertisments for actual golfing programs.    FHs

Glad to hear that you are out of your slump, and over your illness. And it a relief to see a blog that is not trying to sell something. The snow and the cold will keep me from playing but it is good to hear that someone can still get out and let us know how it's going.

fh'S

HOWSIT  is onto something here. Just like in "Tin Cup" you simply had to take your mind off of something that you could not find in your head. So you put your change in a different pocket and tees went to the front pocket instead of always being in the back pocket trying to change the "mojo" man. Just tell yourself, " Hey I am better than this dammit now get my head out of my butt and hit the ball like I have always done in the past.!" Lesson over.

Sounds like you couldn't see the forest because of all the trees!!!  Our minds are our worst enemies when it comes to golf.  Sometimes finding a way to get the mind to look at the game a little different allows us to forget about TRYING to play the game and lets us just play!  Good luck in Anaheim!!!
