For a couple of years now I've been thinking I should write a blog about Royal Dornoch. By happenstance this site gives me an unobtrusive way of doing just that. Why Royal Dornoch? Well it just happens to be the most wonderful golf course I've ever played, and I've played a lot of great courses. Our first visit here resulted from a friend reading an article written by Tom Waston suggesting he'd never had as much fun playing golf. That was in 1984. For years we kept coming back and eventually bought a holiday home next to the course. In 2000 we left the south of England to live in Dornoch, mostly to escape the rat race. Since then we've been involved in all sorts of stuff all over the world and golf no longer attracts the way it used to (we can play anytime we want of course). But Royal Dornoch remains the perfect place for chasing the dream. In later posts we'll describe and explain more, but for the moment let me wet the readers appetite with an explanation I used to give to golfers I caddied for. Some were kind enough to ask why this most wonderful of places was so special. The only explanation I could give was even the best local golfers can shoot 69 or 82 and not understand the difference. Golf at Royal Dornoch is an examination few who've tried can resist repeating the challenge.
