I saw this on TGC tonight, then did a search and found it is some 25+ years old, so I don't know who actually thought of it first. I have been messing around with it in the back yard, and it seems to do what the guy on TGC say's it will do. I did a copy, and paste for anyone interested. Any questions, just ask, and I will try to help. Of course anyone who has first hand knowlege of this drill, don't be bashful.   FHs

"THE CLOTHES HANGER DRILL by MARTIN HILL

Take clothes hanger, a plastic one works better than a wire one, because it has a larger diameter, but a wire one will work just as good. Probably even better for those with small hands.

With the longer bottom part running on top, just a little to your rear hand side of the grip, with the shoulder portion leaning foreward touching you lead arm inside forearm, from the butt end of the club down towards the metal shaft, (with the hook part pointing a little to your lead shoulder, to the sky) take your grip so that upper shoulder part of the hanger is in contact with the inside part of your lead forearm. Your grip will cover the hanger, holding it in place. From the address position, take your normal swing from start to finish.

The idea behind this drill is to keep the front arm’s inside forearm in contact with the shoulder part of the hanger from the start of the back swing, down swing, impact, and follow through. If you can do this this you are releasing through the ball correctly, and not “scooping” or letting the club head get ahead of your hands. If you lose the connection between the inside forearm, and the hanger before, or during impact, and follow through, you are losing power.

You can also slide the hanger up the grip towards your belly, or pant’s button to give yourself a visual of maintaining the club, and hands the proper distance from your body. "

Martin Hall is from the UK and is the the teacher of Morgan Pressel.  He is best know for his swing aids as he has one for about every aspect of teaching.  I personally would like to spend some time with him.

He did seem to know what he was talking about. I wished I would have recorded the show, as he went through alot of swing instruction, very quickly. I suppose I could go to TGC and pull it up from their library. I have been trying this drill in my back yard, and it does seem to work well as a swing aid.

I had heard about this clothes hanger drill before, but it was such a "big hush hush secret" of the PGA teaching pros. The resident, non pga certified, instructor on that website wanted to be paid before he would share it with anyone asking about it.   FHs

Froghairs,

Martin is the master of gimmick aids to make it much easier for anyone to get the idea or mental image as well as the proper feel for a technique that he is trying to achieve. I do enjoy watching him give lessons. He tries to simplify it as much as possible. He will use rubber hoses, basketballs, ping pong paddles, hula hoops. etc. A truly great instructor.
