I'm curious when the golf bug bit everyone -- was it during early childhood, your teen years, your early professional years, your retirement years?  Or perhaps it was after an injury, as a means to slowly rehabilitate your body and mind?

Along these same lines, did someone introduce you to the sport, like a parent, best friend or co-worker, or did you just stumble upon it yourself? What age do you think its best to be introduced to golf... or does it not matter one bit?

I'm sure there are as many stories as there are people, and I think it'd be interesting to hear how everyone got into the sport.

I got the golf bug when I bought be first set of clubs when I was 15.  Before then I used to use rental clubs or other peoples clubs.  As a result, I never cared much for the game because I didn't own my clubs.  Once I had my own I could play as much as I wanted.  I took lots of pride in my first set.  Always cleaning them and I even used turtle wax to bring out the shine in them.

What about you?

I got the "bug" back about 1984.  I was a young Marine stationed in Yuma AZ.  My crusty old Master Sergeant needed someone to drive his cart for him on Thursday afternoons.  I don't know if he was afraid to drink and drive the carts,  if he was just lonely, or if he actually liked me, but...  he insisted I join him on the links while the crew conducted the weekly field day.  It wasn't long before I had my own set of clubs and we became regular whackers & hackers.  Since then I discovered that in many areana's, to include the Marine Corps, that much of the work and discussions are accomplished on the course.  WHAT A COUNTRY!!!!!

I got bite by the bug about 36 years ago, I used to go to the course with my dad and watch him play. That summer when school was out myself and a friend used to take our dads clubs and walk to the golf course. If we walked down this old abandoned rail road grade it was about a 1 1/2 mile walk. We would play all day and then walk back home at night. Sometimes our parents would pick us up.

About 12 years ago, my son in laws who at the time were dating my daughters asked me to go golfing with them. I declined their offer because this was right after my Mother had passed away. My wife finally told me to get out of the house, and go with the boys since I needed to get my mind off things, and needed to move on. I decided to go with them to a local par 3 muni. I had never golfed before, and only watched it on TV on  rare occassions more for the scenery more than anything else. I did have a favorite golfer  when younger who was Tony Lema, but that was as far as my interest in golf went.

The par 3 muni was a good thing for me. Using borrowed clubs, I even scored better than one the boys, shooting a 56, and for some reason I became hooked on this game. That muni visit was on a Friday.  I knew absolutely nothing about equipment, and the next day I was at the local swap meet looking to buy "my own" set of clubs. What I found was an old bag attached to a  trolley with several Spalding rusted irons, an old putter and some "wooden" woods. Total cost of my find was $10. Boy was I surprised about what I was going to learn about equipment...LOL

The  rest as they say, was history. .......Frog

I got the bug when My dentist had all of these trophies in his  house and he was not the athletic type if you know what I Mean. I on the other hand played basketball and tennis. Did not have time for the sport. But in the  summer I liked putt putt at the boardwalk in Asbury Park and I watched golf on tv. Not until college did it hit bad. Brought clubs to a small college in Pa. practiced out behind the gym. Even had pledgees shag my balls like the golfers did in the old time. ( You can catch a ball in a shag bag)  But I got to single digets before my first marriage. Game went on hiatus then came alive in fla. Where I live now. Yes its back in single digets again.

I might have the oddest introduction to the game of golf...

My friends and I started playing Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004 (video game) but none of us had ever really golfed before, so we went and we sucked but it was  awesome and I've never stopped since.

I got bit by the golf bug almost a year ago when two other couples and my husband and I decided to take group lessons. One of the golf clubs in our city, Shale Creek, has a golf pro who was giving group lessons, so we took about 4 lessons, four fridays in a row.  We finally felt comfortable enough to venture out on the golf course and now we all golf together about every weekend.  Since we all currently live in Ohio, which is not known for its warm weather, we even did some golf weekends this winter to Florida to play.  I have been playing golf all across the country, trying different golf courses in some of the cities that I visit on the east coast and in the southeast part of the US during some of my travel for work. I am becoming a 'golf ho' with my interest in golf and try to watch or read anything I can to learn more!

About 35 years ago, I decided to try it out.  One of the local munis was in pretty rough shape, and generally speaking it wasn't very busy.  I decided that would be the best place to give it a shot.  I went out by myself a few times, then discovered there were a few people I worked with who were golfers.  It was then that I found that golf is not only a great game, but it's also a great social activity.

I got the golf bug about 10 years ago when I played once with my aunt and have loved it ever since.   I love being outside playing and even have gotten my 11 year old nephew involved in playing.  He started at 8 years old and sometimes out drives me on the driving range and course.

I first starting golfing a long time ago as a child, my grandfather taught me how to swing and navigate the golf course. Once I was able to politely play golf my grandfather brought me out on the course.  Since that first round I've been hooked ever since!

I always bought my clubs brand new and I could never figure out why they never performed properly.

It turns out my swing was the cause, I just coudlnt' hit the ball straight.  So now, instead of spending thousands on clubs, i buy cheaper clubs from BuyCheap Drivers.com and spent the extra money on swing lessons!

I first tried golf when I was 15 as part of PE Class.  I tried to get into it again when I was 21, married and all of my married buddies were playing.  But I couldn't say I really caught the "bug" until about 3 years ago.  I started playing golf again because after moving I couldn't find another basketball or softball game during the off season (hockey season that is).  But, after playing rounds with some guys who were actually good, I started to improve.  As my scores started to drop, that's when I really got serious about the game.  Now, 3 years later, I'm a 11 handicap, loving every minute of golf and running my own golf tour.
