If you wanted to lower your handicap by 10 strokes over the next year and had a budget of $1,000 US, what would you spend it on?

Hmmm, 1st thought was lessons...but I've never found a teacher who can fix what I got (actually, it's probably more an issue with the student)...then maybe some fancy training aid...flashback to Tin Cup in the trailer...ok, maybe not. New clubs...technology is great but why have the average golfers handicaps not gone down in the past 60 years???

OK, I've got it...spend 30 minutes three times a week on the driving range and spend the $1k on Scotch at, where else...The 19th Hole.

I would send the Wife on vacation and I would be able to spend the week golfing at my local course where I have a season pass. (That is pretty much what I did this week but the Wife was working and I was on vacation.) Since I walk, my legs are telling me it was a long winter.

Sorry, but I don't think a golfer could drop 10 strokes with just a $1000.00. Maybe if she/he had a gift to swing a club, a $1000.00 might be enough to fine tune an already solid swing, and could possibly find 10 strokes.

Properly fitted clubs from a qualified fitter is going to run a few hundred dollars. After that, more than a few swing lessons from a "qualified" swing instructor would put a golfer way past your $1000.00 limit when added to the club fitting, and purchase of those clubs.

Shawn Humphries took Troy Aikman ( a gifted athelete) from a 15 hdcpr to a 3 in a year or so. I bet he paid Humphries way more that $1000.00 to achieve that low number.

Living in Vegas i might invest the $1000.00 in the "Mega Bucks" machine, and hope I win enough money to be able to afford to lower my hndcp by 10 strokes.......lol

Now to really answer your question, I would probably spend the $1000.00 bucks on a set of fitted clubs, and some premium golf balls. Then be happy with lowering my hndcp by 5+/- strokes...............FHs

Depends a bit on the starting handicap:

If you're a 36 wanting to drop to 26 I'd spend a third on lessons, a third on green fees and the remainder on Scotch (don't forget to call Jim and me!).

If you're an 11 handicap aiming at 1 then spend  some on properly fitted gear and the rest on Scotch (and also remember to call Jim and me for the latter!). It may take many years, if ever, for the h/c to drop - but at least you'll have two new friends along the way...

On a (even less) serious note: I think it was Greg Norman who said something like this: "The most important wood in your bag to help you loose strokes is called a pencil..." So, spend a $ on a pencil and the rest on Scotch...

Jim, there are some good teachers in the SAT area.  If I were you I'd spend it on Bryan Gathright over at Oakhill CC.  I'm sure they teaching pro at your club is much less.  If I lived closer to you I'm sure I could fix your swing.  Anything for a good laugh right?

By the way $1,000 at Cimarron can get you 3 months of unlimited lessons with me.

That sounds like a bargain to me, and is in line with what I think golf lessons should cost for us "non" professionals.  FHs

I would say...a gym membership and some personal training. Work on stretching and range of motion. It's not the equipment or more lessons.

Practice would be my second suggestions. You get better on the range, not the course.
