Mike Adams and T.J. Tomasi in the book "Total Golf" discuss a chipping method using multi clubs. It is a calculation you would use to choose a specific club, for specific carry, and roll distance. Myself I only use one or two clubs for my chip shots, but I do like their method that utilizes only one set stroke, being used with different clubs. They have two constants you need to remember. One being a landing area 1 foot on the green, and the other being the number 12. Below is a cut & paste on how it works. Indulge your self.

 "The Two Constants;

1. Landing area on the green is 1 foot past the fringe.

2. The # 12.

The # 12 Calculation;With your normal stride measure the distance from the ball to the “1” ft. landing area. This gives you a numerator. Next with your normal stride measure the distance from the “1” ft landing area to the hole. This number gives a denominator. Then reduce the fraction, and subtract the denominator from the # 12. The left over sum matches the club number to be used.

Example 1: 2 steps from the ball to the landing area. 6 steps from the landing area to the hole. OR 2/6. Reduced, this fraction becomes 1/3. Subtract 3 from 12 which = 9 OR a 9i.

Example 2: 1 step from the ball to the landing area. 6 steps from the landing area to the hole. Fraction = 1/6. 12 minus 6 equals 6, or a 6i."

Of course with this method you would have to make adjustments for up hill, and down hill pin placements. Plus if your stride does not match your chipping stroke, other adjustments need to made. Also if there is a problem with the 1 foot landing area, such a mound. I fool around with this method, and I can see it has merit, but I chip pretty well with just my 8i, and AW.  FHs

FHs,

   I have used a method that is very similar if not the same for years and if you just figure in the slope with it, it really works well. People just have to get to know what each iron will do. I like to think of it as a cocktail ingrediant. 1 part air, and so many parts roll. below is what I found to be very close for "parts" on the roll or ratios.

    sw= 1to 0.5     PW= 1 to 1    9i= 1 to 2    8i= 1to3   7i=1to4   6i=1to5  5i= 1to6   4i= 1to7

I've heard about that method, and it makes sense to me.  So far, I stick to 7i, 9i and PW for my chipping with fairly decent results, but I might try this at the practice green to see how it works.

You know, it never hurts to try something new. I have been seriously practicing with this method. I thought I was doing quite well using just two clubs. However after a week of practice, I can now place a ball that is off the green usually with in 3'-4' of the pin. Adjustments, or reads still have to be made. As Ron pointed out, the slope, or the break needs to be factored in. An up hill, or down hill club adjustment still has to be accounted for. And of course the chosen landing area need to be looked at. One of the biggest improvements for me is that most of the time the ball will roll past the hole. Consequently I am holing more of these chip shots for that very reason. I have yet to try this technique on the course, but I have about 5 rounds of golf during this coming week in Wyoming, Utah, and Arizona. I plan to use this new (to me) chipping method. FHs

FH'S you should try a hybrid from just off the green to. It has made a difference for me and seems that the percentages are in your favor of getting the ball on the green and a serious chance of going in. I have used it across a 40' green to as small as a pin 5 feet off the green. I treat it like a putter and you have to stroke it as if you were on the green with a puter. The ball really takes off with over spin and keeps a good line.

Ron; Funny you should mention using a hybrid. I play with Tour Edge Ironwoods. This means my whole set of irons, from my 2i to Lw are hybrids.

Now after playing six rounds of golf in the past six days, I have to say this mathmatical multi club chipping is a very viable way to chip. My up and down percentage prior to using this method was around 40+%. I can happily say now that I am up in the 60% range. Unhappily I have to add I missed more than a few 4, and 5 foot putts. Conditions were varied from wet to dry due to the rain, and sunny days I encountered on this past road trip. These weather conditions impacted the stimp of the greens I played on. These conditions, along with mis-reads, and ball speed contributed to some easy putts being missed.

The golf course in Jackson, Wy was played in very wet, chilly conditions, That being said I would recommend it to anyone passing through the area to play it. The views are spectacular, and if you are lucky enough, the wildlife you might encounter will make your golf game take a back seat on that day.

Another course I would like to mention for anyone driving on I-15 past mile marker 163 (Utah) is a little 9 hole track in Fillmore, UT. Nice little course that is part of the Best Western motel complex. The motel is a bit expensive, but the golf is priced right. A room, and 18 hole golf package will cost you $112.00 for one night.

Golfing in Moab, UT is a fun outing. Again the surrounding views are worth looking at. Be prepared for long waits between holes due some visiting retirees who are very slow players. The town of Moab (as is Jackson, WY) is tourist trap, so watch your wallet.

Our last golf stop was in Page, AZ which we played in very sunny, pleasent conditions. Again, if you are in the area, and have time you need to play this course. Now if you have a problem with long carries over water, you might want to skip a couple of holes. lol To offset the water holes, there is a par 3 tee box sitting a couple 100 feet above the green. Another hole runs (8%+/-) up hill from the tee box to the green.

It was a fun trip. FHs

I use anything from a wedge to my 7i. I get plenty of up n downs. I had a very good instructor. Once a week I practice 40 yards and in. It's really the only way to get to know how the short game feels. I really think chipping is all about feel.

Steph,

   I do have to agree with you feel is an important factor and it is nice to hear some one practices their short game religously like myself. I use my feel when  my ball is about 3 inches from the hole... do I feel like it will go in or not ... just a little humor there Steph.

     FH's my father just bought the 3 wood of tour edges and they claim it to be the longest 3 wood on tour. Do you feel the same way about it? He and I will try it this weekend.

Ron; First off I really like tour Edge products. For playability, and service after the sale, no other products are better. Maybe some are equal, but not better.  Plus their products are easier on the pocket book. My current tour Edge 3w is an older model. It is a Bazooka HL 15* Hyper Steel, and is about 4 or 5 years old. The shaft is a Bazooka Graphite, High launch, Low Kick Point, UST,  Stiff Flex OEM. I have hit all of TE's new stuff. This includes the Exotics, and GeoMax lines. The new stuff does not play as well for me. I hit my 3w 230 yards off the tee, and 220 off the deck, and I am very accurate with it. In fact, I have a 12* GeoMax driver that does not go as far as my 3w. My present driver is a Golfsmith 10.5 Killer Bee, which I do hit about 30 yards farther than my 3w, on good hits, but I am not as accurate with it.  If TE's new  stuff played as well for me, I would buy their new products to up grade what I now have. I am not going to say the new stuff does not play longer for others, but I can say they do not play longer for me. Just a note, I own 3 of these older 3 woods, which are all identical, and all play the same for me. I purchased the other two just so when the older one wears out, I will still have a replacement that won't require a new learning curve.  FHs
