Back in the saddle

05/10/2007 07:45:14 / i love golf

For those who were not aware, I've been off the course for the last 8 weeks due to reconstructive right foot surgury.  I've been accessorized with steel ball joints and tweeking the suspension a little.  Earlier this week I went to the driving range to "feel" things out and the swing was tallerable.  Yesterday I went to my local course and made myself keep it to 9 holes riding so I wouldn't over-do-it.

All my life, at least since 1984 when I took up golfing, I've fought a slice.  Not ONE slice yesterday!!!  As a matter of fact, I had the most beautiful draw a hacker could beg for!  I hit 6 of 7 fairways (the 2 par 3's don't count).  I had two drives that cleared 270....I'm lucky to clear 200!!!!  The irony of this is that creeks crossing the fairway and were way out of range quickly became an issue. It's bitter sweet to finally hit the ball so far down the middle and lose it in the water!  My irons kept pulling left though leaving me in the sand traps.  Mac, youd be proud...I was out of all five in one swing!  Short game and putting was good cause I WAS able to work on that in those 8 weeks.

I have to assume that this was all due to the fact that I have to swing nice and easy and can't push off with the right side.  Not the best way to fix your slice but it has worked for me....so far!

I told myself in the begining that I wouldn't keep score so I don't know how it faired but you can rest asured that it was just plain fun!  Now I'm trying to figure out how to con the boss into letting me off to try again today.

Glad to hear about your recovery and your game! Sounds like you better get back out there for another 9 today so you can remember everything you did yesterday. Keep us posted!

howzit,

So happy to hear that you are recovering nicely.  Words of advice....DO NOT rush your recovery!!!  I speak from a painful experience after shoulder replacement.  Just take your time!

Now about your "game".  Getting out of the sand in one.  That should be a sin!   As Jim said, weight on the left side.

How to get out of work to play another round.....tell him that it will make you a better worker.  That at this time all you can think about is playing around and that afterwards you will be able to be more productive.  OR  better yet....invite him to join you!

BEWARESAND TRAPS AHEAD,

John

howzit,

Glad to hear about your recovery. I will take a very uneducated guess and say that you are probably doing a much better (albeit forced) job of transferring your weight to the left side. I fought that for a long time and it always caused me to cut the ball. I have been working on getting my weight to the left side, focusing mainly on the follow through. Again, i'm not a Golf Doctor, but I would think that your tender right foot would force you to transfer more weight to your left side. Just a thought.

Anyway, congrats on finding the answer. Just remember this when your foot heals completely.

Fairways & greens,

Jim
