Balance

In my last few blogs we have speculated my recent improvement in playing is partially due to my healing right foot, which will not allow me to hang back, making me actually transfer my weight/movement forward. This is true BUT... there is another thing that has gone on that I havn't shared yet. In all discussions about good swings and how to improve them, how to get better distance out of your drives, and anything else dealing with good shots the word "balance" always comes up. My Padiatrist and I have been working on a unique method of strengthening my foot. This method entails using two exercising discs that are 18 inches in diameter and about 3 1/2 inches thick and full of air. If you place them on the ground, shoulder width apart and stand on them your feet go crazy trying to balance your body, strengthening the muscles in the feet and ankles.
I have found that if you take a club in your hand, step on these things, get into your address stance and slowly take a full swing you can find out how "OUT OF BALANCE" you really are! Slowly working the swing back and forth you will start to learn good balance. As this gets easier, start to swing alittle faster until you can make about a 70 percent swing.
Even though we have very busy days and can't get out to play like we would like to, we can do this for 5 to 10 minutes in our back yard a couple times a week. This may do more for your weekend game than a couple evenings at the driving range!
The discs can be purchased at any sprting goods store.
