O'hair, polite or not?

03/10/2008 06:11:24 / i love golf

hello all. thought I would relay what I saw on the 16th tee yesterday at the PODS championshiip in palm harbor florida. I walked from the green to the tee of the 16th hole and I would say there were quite a number on spectators around the tee. O' Hair walked up to survery the hole but he was on the tee well over 1 minute before his playing parters were still putting out on the 15 green. This surely didn't set right with me. He didn't look mad or disgusted regarding his play or the play of his two playing partners. Is this common now a days on tour? Playing and watching over 45 years, I don't remember this happening very much.  Hey.. I like the young guy, don't know him but thought someone else out there could shed some light on what I saw. Thanks, Matthew

I think perhaps elfigregory might be right.Being on the clock. The 16th hole was empty of players at the time so his group could have been that slow group. thanks for the feedback.

Proper golf etiquette states that you should wait until the entire group has holed out, but if the group was "on the clock" and if he felt somewhat responsible for the situation, maybe it was his way of saying, "Hey guys, I'm sorry and I'll meet you on the tee box". Who knows.

Sean O'Hair and Ben Crane are the slowest two players on tour.  Keep in mind that there was a group on the clock in the event yesterday and I could have very well been O'Hairs group.  Now that the Sr. Tour has Langer they will have to deal with the sloth of the moss.  I truly think a round of golf should take 3 players between 4 to 4.5 hours to play.  Not any shorter or longer reguardless of walking or using golf cars.  Thanks for the blog!-Will

Matthew,

I am not sure I understood you right on this was O'Hair finished playing the previous hole? and then looking towards the next hole? If so I know usually you wait for your partners to hole out but some folks also do not want to hold up their partners and disrupt a flow going on the course. About 4 years ago I tired to qualify for the Nationwide tour in californina and we had a person who would do that maybe you heard of him " Ricky Barnes". He played in the Masters after he was the U.A. Amatuer champion. He did that on  few holes just so he would not delay anyone on the next hole while he was pondering over what play he was going to make. Most of the pros have a game plan on how they will play the course the night before if not from the practice rounds of Monday or Tuesday. O'Hair may have been changing game plans do to having a nice lead and figuring out the wind conditions, I don;t know I did not get to see it. He could have had a " hitch in his giddy-up" and wanted to see if he clubbed down or up what were his options. It is very hard to say what is going on in his head at that moment. Also remember he has a lot of adrenaline racing through his body having the lead in a tournament and not being in the spotlight for a long time especially after the problems with is Father-in law or father incident a few years ago on the bag. So it is very hard to say.
