Visual practice technique for high or low ball control

02/04/2008 20:39:42 / like playing 36 holes

I have always thought that the pros always make it sound so easy when they want to hit a shot low or high. They simply say " move the ball back in stance or forward". Sounds easy right. I have realized by doing this excersise at the range that I know realize that we really dont move the ball far enough or too far into positions. What I mean is that yes it sounds and really is easy. But we as golfers do not EXECUTE the shot right even from address. I started laying out 3 balls together at the range with the middle ball being in the middle of my stance.(Photo above) Now from here the ball I am hitting, a low shot,  I will move to the back ball for lower shots and forward ball for higher shots. I too being a scratch golfer have some faults. 1 of them I realize is that I do not play the ball far enough in the back position for the lower shot. I moved the ball only about 1/2 a balls width and therefore not getting the results that I was looking for. Some people do the opposite and move the ball too far in any one direction and get awful mis-hits and poor contact.  Now I have noticed a huge difference in trajectory by using this practice technique as well as good contact from any one of these postions. Visually this is a great technique to use on the range while practicing. I am sure you will see hitting a low or high ball on demand will be much easier on the course after doing this several times.

Ron, keep going with the mental tools. In NBA terms, these mental tools and images are the "sixth man", or the fifteenth club. If you mentally add two more ball to the ball that is farthest right in the picture, you see how wide the spread really is for ball postion from center.

That's "one click", one ball width, front or back of center. Making the concept my own. :).

Ron, I devoted my practice (8 played 8 in the cold rain) to your idea today.

I just visualized ( and set out three balls on one approach shot) on everything except tee shots and of course putting.

This is a very useful visualization technique. Ball in center, or one click left, or one click right. Definitely, I tend to put the ball too far forward or back from center, on click (ball width) seems to be plenty. From the 2 hybrid to the sixty degree wedge, this is helpful. Also, it gets me thinking on high versus low shot, and helps bridge the thinking between a low shot on a club up, or a high shot on a club down, and so on. And, when you actually put the three balls down, this is an aid to paying attention to aiming.

I really like the fact that this concept came from this sight. I'd like to see how well I can keep it in mind as I go forward with my practice rounds on the course, and then keep it in play during regular rounds. Simple, useful idea, I encourage anyone here to give it a try, and share the vision.

I like the number three, that's easy to keep in mind and visualize.

Great visual and have been struggling  a little with ball position. Will give this a try on the range.
