Well I went to the Carlsbad Golf Company today in beautiful Calrsbad, Ca. The fitting took about 1 hour on the woods alone. I ended up getting a new Ping driver and stayed in a stiff Flex. I thought for sure I would drop the flex to a regular, but the numbers on the launch monitor told us differently. I was bummed to see my carry distance. Not what I was expecting to see. I really thought it was further with both my old driver and the new one. But on the other hand I feel I have a ton of confidence with this new Ping. I bought the 3 wood to the set also. My spin rates are now at 3400-3500 rpms with a 13.3 launch. The old numbers were 2480 with an 11.7 launch. The old numbers were too low for proper carry. Cant wait to get out to the course and dance with them. I would highly recommend anyone to go to the carlsbad company if you are interested in a fitting. They have all the new tech gear and they are wonderful people with no pressure at all.
I will definently let you know on the progress of the new sticks. The numbers on carry distance increased on average by 15 yards for the driver. I guess the real test will be on a course that I have played before and are familar with to see the new distances. I would never buy a club off the rack unless it was a last minute emergency. I have not done that in over 15 years now. My old driver was a KZG Gemini 9 degree w/ an AJ Tech stiff shaft. This club is a very good one and was a top dog about 6 years ago. Phil Mickelson had used their irons in a few tournaments but the company being so young could not put together a proper sponsorship deal to lock it in. If the numbers would have been good with a new KZG then I would have stuck with it.
Congratulations, Ron! Let us know after you take them for at test drive. This is like getting a new engine. I have really liked the sound and feel of some Ping drivers I have tried at the test center from time to time. Still using my old Cleveland as really my swing is still developing, and the driver budget is at zero now, anyway (so is yours now). Enjoy!
(The old fellow is reportedly still a stiff flex for yet another spring season as he celebrates the ancient spring ritual of his life in golf years.)
Glad to hear you have new friends to play with. Getting a proper club fitting will help anyone's game. Especially those golfers who want to play better, and generate lower scores. Those who buy clubs off the rack with out a qualified club fitter's spec's (for their swing) are pretty much in a crap shoot. FHs
