Merry Christmas Marine
DATE: 12/11/2007 07:28:31 / MOOD: like playing 36 holes

As I was digging through some of my "stuff" I came across this poem.  My wife acquired it during Christmas time while I was serving in the first Gulf War.  I don't know who the author is or how old it is but I thought it might be good to share.

MERRY CHRISTMAS MARINE

‘Twas the night before Christmas, he lived all alone,

In a one-bedroom house made of plaster and stone.

I had come down the chimney, with presents to give,

and to see just who in this home did live.

I looked all about, a strange sight I did see

No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.

No stocking by the fire, just boots filled with sand,

On the wall hung pictures of distant lands.

With medals and badges, awards of all kind,

A sobering thought soon came through my mind.

For this house was different, unlike any I’d seen.

This was the home of a U.S. Marine.

I’d heard stories about them, I had to see more,

So I walked down the hall and pushed open the door.

And there lay sleeping, silent, alone,

Curled up on the floor in his one bedroom home.

He seemed so gentle, his face so serene.

Not how I pictured a U.S. Marine.

Was this the hero, of whom I’d just read?

Curled up in his poncho, a floor for his bed?

His head was clean-shaven, his weathered face tan.

I soon understood, this was more than a man.

For I realized the families that I saw that night,

Owed their lives to these men, who were willing to fight.

Soon around the Nation, the children would play,

And grown-ups would celebrate on a bright Christmas Day.

They all enjoyed freedom, each month and all year,

Because of Marines like this one lying here.

I couldn’t help wonder how many lay alone,

On a cold Christmas Eve, in a land far from home.

Just the very thought brought a tear to my eye,

I dropped to my knees and started to cry.

He must have awaken, for I heard a rough voice,

"Santa don’t cry, this life is my choice.

I fight for freedom, I don’t ask for more,

My life is my God, my country, my Corps."

With that he rolled over, drifted off to sleep.

I couldn’t control it; I continued to weep.

I watched him for hours, so silent and still,

I noticed he shivered from the cold nights chill.

So I took off my jacket; the one made of red,

And I covered this Marine from his toes to his head.

Then I put on his T-shirt of scarlet and gold,

With an eagle, globe and anchor emblazoned so bold.

And although it barely fit me, I began to swell with pride,

And for one shining moment, I was Marine Corps deep inside.

I didn’t want to leave him so quiet in the night,

This guardian of honor so willing to fight.

But half asleep he rolled over, and a voice so clean and pure,

Said "Carry on Santa, It’s Christmas Day, all secure."

One look at my watch and I knew he was right.

Merry Christmas, my friend, Semper Fi, and good night.

WOOO-HOOOO, It Worked!!!!!!
DATE: 11/13/2007 07:37:51 / MOOD: can't wait for it to warm up

Greatings all!  It's been almost 13 weeks since my second joint replacement for my right foot.  This silicone joint is working great!  I've got 50 degrees of movement in the joint and more flexibility than I've had in the last 15 years.  The sorness is finally to the point where I don't really even notice it, except after my workouts.  I made it out to the course last week to give it a try, but I left the scorecard in the box!   It was a fun day and things felt really good.  I have found, since I've been able to go to the range, that my stance and swing have changed.  This will be a great winter getting a new swing together and getting ready for spring.  Maybe Santa will see fit to update a few of my clubs for me

Off the couch and out the door with a club in my hand!
DATE: 10/11/2007 08:09:51 / MOOD: can't wait for the sun to come up

Well, it's been about 7 weeks since they replaced the titanium joint in my right foot with a silicone joint.  What a difference it has made!!!  The swelling has mostly gone down and this week I was able to slowely start hitting balls again.  Monday and Tuesday I took it real easy and worked with just my wedges doing some chipping and pitching.  My driving range is 200 yds long and about 70 feet wide; a cleared area in the middle of sage brush and cedar trees.  Walking out to pick up the balls in between hitting sessions really does my foot good.  Today, after my traction therapy, I think I'll break out the short irons and do a little "light" swinging.  The traction therapy is a special boot I have that has a spring loaded bar across the front with a paddle that rests under the big toe.  When activated it provides spring tension, pushing the toe up, thus keeping flexability in the scar tissue and stretching the tendons, which havn't moved this far in many years!

I think I need a trip to Mac in the Sands vacation spot!

Back on the couch!
DATE: 08/28/2007 19:00:20 / MOOD: like playing 36 holes

For those of you who remember, six months ago I had reconstruction surgery on my rt foot where they installed a titanium joint in for the big toe.  After things healed my game came on strong and had one of my best games ever.  In the last few months problems arose and the joint locked up tight.  It was hard to walk, let alone have a follow through.  Last Wed the doc went in and tried to repair things but found that the joint just wouldn't work so he changed it out for one made of silicone...my foot got a boob job!  I'm only a week out and I'm able to walk already and the toe bends to 45 degrees, which is more than I had 20 yrs ago.  We'll give er some time and then see what we can tear up on the links.  Catch you all later.

What's worse - slow play or slow play?!?
DATE: 07/16/2007 08:14:26 / MOOD: like playing 36 holes

These past couple weekends I've found myself in tough dilema's, and I'm not sure which is worse because each has it's own challenges.  I have two "home" courses that I really enjoy.  One is close to where I live and the other is close to where I work.  They are owned by the same corporation so the annual members pass I buy is good at both, which allows me to play on weekdays for 12 bucks greenfee and cart for 18 holes, and 20 bucks on weekend AM's.  On weekends I usually go to the course as a single and join up with another single, or small group.  My weekend course has this habit of sending 9 holers out on the back 9 and 18 holers out on the 1st tee.  Many times, by the time we get to the 10th hole forward progress comes to a halt and you have to wait on almost every hit.  By the time the area ahead is clear your so pumped to hit that enevitably you rush it and.......   Up to this weekend I thought this was the epitamy of golfing!

This weekend I was teamed up with a group of three; father, son and grandson - who was about 15.   They apologized in the beginning that they weren't very good.  Not a problem.  The problem is - they had no purpose in their movements.  They would drive up to a ball, sit and talk for a bit, get out and fumble through their bag, pull out a club, look around a little, put the club back and grab another, fidget over the ball a little....and then top it.  They did this for each ball, for each player, on each hole!  By the 4th hole I was pulling my hair out!!! (What little I have left).  Now, mind you I have been making hint's since the second hole about the importance of keeping up with the pace of play.  We were now 2 holes back from the group in front of us.

I had many options: Bolt forward by myself and pretend this nightmare never happened, which would be good for me but do nothing for the poor groups starting to stack up behind.  Allowing groups to play through isn't really an option because that would stretch us out to a 7 hour round and just continuously cause a bottle neck; so I chose to sacrifice my round and try to get this group to make up some ground with the group WAY UP in front of us.  (Where is the Marshal you ask?  We started about 0645 on Sunday, the Marshal doesn't show up till about 1030 or so)

I had a quick conference with the two adults, explaining to them the dilema..we payed our money to play and shouldn't have to rush but.... everybody behind us payed theirs to and it's not fair to them to drag their games into the trash either.  They agreed so we set a few rules.  If you nub your tee shot you will drop with the rest in the fairway (actually they would drop with me in the fairway).  Once you've hit 8 strokes on the hole you will pick up and drop it short of the green.  This way everybody gets to chip on and putt.

To make this long story not as long as that round, it worked!  By the time the marshal came out we were on the Tee when the group in front was on their green so it turned out to be an ok day.  I threw the scorecard away after 7 or 8 and just tried to concentrate on each shot.  Nothing like a Sunday morning 6 hour round!

Balance
DATE: 05/15/2007 08:15:31 / MOOD: like playing 36 holes

In my last few blogs we have speculated my recent improvement in playing is partially due to my healing right foot, which will not allow me to hang back, making me actually transfer my weight/movement forward.  This is true BUT... there is another thing that has gone on that I havn't shared yet.  In all discussions about good swings and how to improve them, how to get better distance out of your drives, and anything else dealing with good shots the word "balance" always comes up.  My Padiatrist and I have been working on a unique method of strengthening my foot.  This method entails using two exercising discs that are 18 inches in diameter and about 3 1/2 inches thick and full of air.  If you place them on the ground, shoulder width apart and stand on them your feet go crazy trying to balance your body, strengthening the muscles in the feet and ankles.

I have found that if you take a club in your hand, step on these things, get into your address stance and slowly take a full swing you can find out how "OUT OF BALANCE" you really are!  Slowly working the swing back and forth you will start to learn good balance.  As this gets easier, start to swing alittle faster until you can make about a 70 percent swing.

Even though we have very busy days and can't get out to play like we would like to, we can do this for 5 to 10 minutes in our back yard a couple times a week.  This may do more for your weekend game than a couple evenings at the driving range!

The discs can be purchased at any sprting goods store.

What a game!
DATE: 05/11/2007 09:17:26 / MOOD: i love golf

I've got to share my round from yesterday!  My wife has threatened me with life and limb if she hears another word about it so I must share it with you.  I shot 86..my lowest score ever!  I had 4 pars on the front and 5 on the back...4 in a row!

Two holes must be shared.  The hole which broke my 4 in a row streak was a par 4  and #18 which was a par 5.  On the par 4 my second shot ended up in a greenside bunker.  Now, this wasn't just a "fried egg" lie, the ball was totally buried.  We had to excavate to locate the top of it!  I broke out my trusty 60 deg Case backhoe and went to work.  It wasn't pretty and it wasn't spectacular but it was on the green and I two putted for bogie!

On 18 my second shot left me at 150 out 10 ft from a creek that runs across the fairway, down the left side of the fairway to the front of the green and around the left side of the green.  The right side of the green is protected with bunkers and stiff hills.   I know I can make a 150yd shot with my 6 iron so I let-er rip.  The ball landed in the water just left of the green!  After laughing and crying a little I dropped a ball and let-er rip.  The ball went to the same spot! At this time I had to back up and re-group.  My mind was realing about how I was crashing such a great round on the last hole!  All of a sudden Tin Cup popped into my mind and I decided "to heck with the score...I'll make it or run out of balls trying!"  I dropped another, landed it on the green and two putted for a snow man.     I never add my score until I finish so I was really suprised to see what I actually ended up with.  It's funny....with such a great game, the two holes that stick in my mind are not par's but victorious bogies and snowmen!

I think Jim is right, my sore right foot is keeping my weight transfering left instead of staying back.  I wonder if there's a way to keep it just a little sore....Oh well

My wife thanks you for listening to me so she won't have to!

Back in the saddle
DATE: 05/10/2007 07:45:14 / MOOD: i love golf

For those who were not aware, I've been off the course for the last 8 weeks due to reconstructive right foot surgury.  I've been accessorized with steel ball joints and tweeking the suspension a little.  Earlier this week I went to the driving range to "feel" things out and the swing was tallerable.  Yesterday I went to my local course and made myself keep it to 9 holes riding so I wouldn't over-do-it.

All my life, at least since 1984 when I took up golfing, I've fought a slice.  Not ONE slice yesterday!!!  As a matter of fact, I had the most beautiful draw a hacker could beg for!  I hit 6 of 7 fairways (the 2 par 3's don't count).  I had two drives that cleared 270....I'm lucky to clear 200!!!!  The irony of this is that creeks crossing the fairway and were way out of range quickly became an issue. It's bitter sweet to finally hit the ball so far down the middle and lose it in the water!  My irons kept pulling left though leaving me in the sand traps.  Mac, youd be proud...I was out of all five in one swing!  Short game and putting was good cause I WAS able to work on that in those 8 weeks.

I have to assume that this was all due to the fact that I have to swing nice and easy and can't push off with the right side.  Not the best way to fix your slice but it has worked for me....so far!

I told myself in the begining that I wouldn't keep score so I don't know how it faired but you can rest asured that it was just plain fun!  Now I'm trying to figure out how to con the boss into letting me off to try again today.
